Stop action animation can range from a few frames cobbled roughly together to a feature film. The former is easy enough to create with an iPhone and an editing app. The more complicated the animation, the longer and more involved the process will take – both in shooting the footage and in editing the images into a cohesive final product.
A quick and dirty dino animation using iPhone Xr and StopMotion editing app.
Stop action animation can present a sense of fun and whimsey. While my battling dinos may have only taken a few minutes to create, I spent considerably more time and energy creating the one-minute animation called A Single Fold. It was surely a labor of love.
The process began with a rough storyboard and shot list. I used my Nikon D5600, lighting soft boxes, and a tripod to shoot the nearly 300 frames and edited the piece using Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro.
A Single Fold tells the story of a lonely piece of paper that dreams of traveling the world.
